My main role in JALT is to promote and learn about Pragmatics in language teaching and in everyday life. Acting appropriately and noticing inappropriate actions are just as necessary in cultural awareness--so these are the two main areas that I focus upon.

The Quarter Speaks Out: Women in Japanese Academia

Out of the 5,351 foreign full-time university teachers in Japan, only 967 are women (Huang, 2018). This eight-women panel addresses personal and professional issues influencing the careers of women teaching English in Japanese universities. These issues include career-building, balancing personal and professional lives, being in the minority, workplace harassment, and membership in professional communities. In addition to providing mentorship and inspiration, the panelists will invite the audience to be active participants in this innovative forum.

Understanding Different Communities of Practice

In this session we will describe the Contrast Culture Method (CCM) as a tool for the audience to understand and explore their cultural values. Training can be tailored towards different communities of trainees, such as students, teachers, business people. Several trainers will explain their personal narratives about what they have learned from CCM: how it can be powerful, moving, and not just insightful but deeply reflective on how we act and who we are.
