Hokusei Gakuen University

Thomas Goetz is a professor of English and Director of the Cross-Departmental Language Program. He has been a leader in moodle at Hokusei University, promoting blended learning at all levels. His research is in the application of computers for language learning. He has presented widely in Asia, the Americas, and Europe. He holds two Masters Degrees, one in Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey and, Temple University Japan.

We all work hard to teach, but are we teaching smart? Teaching smart helps students take greater care and control of their learning, online or face-to-face. We’ll discuss some reasons how and why we should teach smart from creating intentional spaces to utilizing technology better. Using examples from National Geographic Learning’s digital support materials, we’ll look at a range of intentional spaces where learners can holistically acquire better communication skills for fluency and confidence.

Working Hard and Working Smart In and Out of Class

Common sense would say that good teachers need to work hard to teach English to their students. But, of what use is hard work if it isn’t approached in an informed, smart manner? At an annual teachers’ meeting at a medium-sized private university, this theme was discussed. How is hard work different from working smart for teaching? Are they one and the same? Survey results and discussion outcomes will be shared.
