Maria Concepcion Alarkon Cervantes

Mie University

I come from the Philippines and am now into my 14th year of uninterrupted English teaching in the country. Having owned the English language myself in manner unique vis-a-vis to how that is taught in the country , made me realize the immense opportunity I have to reflect that with my students. My JALT2020 presentation is on idiomatic expression ( Turning Over a New Leaf in Language Learning) and will demonstrate an assessment gathered from my engineering graduate students on whether or not that should be a content in language learning. Please join me in my presentation on November 22, 9:30 AM -9:55 AM.

The engineering research students undertake presentations in international conferences held in and out of Japan and they have no background on idioms which is a natural part of a native speaker's' manner of communication. Hence communication mishaps and other embarrassing and frustrating situations which are inimical to success can be prevented by including the idioms topic from junior high school. The importance of idioms must not be underestimated. It must be a content in language learning.
