In this presentation, two university educators will discuss from a practical perspective, the methodologies involved in designing, implementing, and evaluating a CEFR-aligned placement test for 1st-year and 2nd-year non-English majors students at a Japanese university. This presentation explains the challenges involved and the solutions undertaken in moving from an official third-party exam to an original CEFR-aligned exam.

At Meikai, Tyson is Coordinator for English Programs for the Economics, Japanese, and Chinese Departments, as well as second-year Academic Writing for the English Department. He is the Membership Chair for Saitama JALT. His current research interests include language curriculum design, assessment, and faculty development.

Patrizia M.J. Hayashi is a Professor and Coordinator of the Multilingual Communication Center at Meikai University. In addition to coordinating programs for Integrated English and Listening for first- and second-year students in the English Department, she runs a self-access center and works closely with the Meikai Education Teacher Training Support Center. Her interests include language curriculum design, assessment and faculty development.
