Shawna Carroll

I have been working at Okayama University in the Graduate School of Education as a Senior Assistant Professor since April 2019. I completed the PhD program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto and taught at several universities in Southern Ontario. My experiences teaching in Japan and conducting research in Toronto have helped me understand more deeply the systemic barriers in both the east and west. My current research aims to understand the impacts of including a specific anti-oppressive global citizenship education framework in Japanese curricula.

Accessibility and Equity Should Be Everyone’s Duty

College & University Education
Sat, Nov 21, 11:20-11:45 JST

Thinking holistically about our students’ experiences as not just language learning, this presentation will report on a survey conducted at progressive liberal university which asked students to explain their feelings about equity and accessibility on campus. With a focus on the results regarding mental health concerns, we explain potential solutions for universities broadly and English educators in particular to help meet our students’ needs and build stronger teaching and learning communities.
