Hirosaki University subsidizes international project-based learning (PBL). Since 2017, we've accompanied four PBL groups to Hawaii Island. Providing unique, experiential, domestic and international content has proven less challenging than selecting balanced, mindful groups. Who do we choose? How do we get a generation with information at their fingertips to put their minds and bodies into live projects? We'll share our process and invite participants to brainstorm improvements to better serve future cohorts.

I am a special associate professor in the Graduate School of Medicine at Hirosaki University. I mainly conduct first year "Medical English" classes and help with biweekly preoperative conferences. Twice a week, four or five surgeons report the next day's surgery cases in English. I have online classes open to all 800 medical student and night classes on Zoom for the surgeons in my department and other doctors in our system. I hope to resume taking medical students to Kona, Hawaii for job-shadowing at hospitals and clinics in Kona, Hawaii--as we report in our PBL presentation--the very near future,
